I’m Lauren Wingenroth, a writer and editor covering the performing arts, health and fitness, running, sports and more. You can find my writing in The New York Times, Outside Magazine, GQ, Women’s Running, Well + Good, Dance Magazine, PS, American Theatre, The Assembly, ESPN, CND Magazine, Playbill, INDY Week and elsewhere.

I’ve interviewed and profiled some of the most influential dance artists of our time, from Raja Feather Kelly to Wendy Whelan to Emily Johnson to Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, previewed New York City’s most-talked-about performances, and sparked industry-shifting conversations in the dance field on issues like sexual harassment and artificial intelligence.

I’ve talked to icons and athletes (like Katie Couric, Billie Jean King, Alicia Keys and Sydney Leroux) about their wellness routines, and reported on pretty much every weird fitness trend you can think of. I’m a running shoe connoisseur, and love testing other products—from hair care to running accessories—to see which are actually worth buying.

I’m often digging into the fascinating backstories behind fitness trends (like why we’re so obsessed with working our “core,” and why it feels so good to wear a workout uniform) and busting common myths (like that it’s somehow possible to speed up your recovery, or that heel striking makes you a bad runner).

Some of my favorite stories have come from the serendipitous collision of my interests—like when I profiled tap choreographer Michelle Dorrance and her dad, the legendary soccer coach Anson Dorrance; or when I talked running with one of my favorite comedians; or when this superwoman took a day off from her Broadway show to run the London Marathon. I ask a lot of questions—like why it seems like hardly anyone is fueling their marathons correctly, or what “all paces welcome” actually means.

In a past life, I was a dancer and choreographer. I’m a former editor of Dance Magazine and editor in chief of Dance Teacher Magazine. I’ve served as the chair of the Dance/NYC Junior Committee, presented my research at the Women in Dance Leadership Conference, led workshops on financial empowerment for artists, moderated panels on issues in the dance field and, yes, even judged dance competitions.

Born and raised on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, I recently returned to my home state to live in Chapel Hill after over a decade in New York City. I graduated with honors and as an Athena Scholar from Barnard College, Columbia University with degrees in dance and English.

When I’m not writing, you’ll likely find me running, hiking, enjoying live dance and theater productions, watching women’s sports (okay fine, I also watch men’s sports sometimes), drinking craft beer or devouring a book.

I’m available for writing and editing assignments, speaking opportunities and more. Get in touch at lauren.wingenroth@gmail.com and follow me on my mostly-personal but sometimes-professional Instagram at @laurenwinging.
